Lesson 6: The Upgrade
Learn how to use the RESTful method to upgrade Joomla
Now that we have installed the jUpgradePRO plugin in our existing Joomla 1.5 web site and the component in our new Joomla 3 web site we're ready to go ahead and perform the migration. Go to your Components menu and select jUpgradePRO. Before you can do the upgrade you need to set some options. Click on the Options icon in the top left. There's many different options. Please follow my Golden Rule that if you've not been told to touch something just don't. We're going to be using the RESTful method for this migration.
So the first tab we can leave at the default settings. Now let's go to the RESTful settings. Here we are asked to enter the details for our existing Joomla 1.5 web site. Enter the web site address remembering to include the http:// at the beginning. Then enter the super administrator username and password for that web site. And finally the security key that you created in the plugin for jUpgradePRO on your Joomla 1.5 web site. We don't need to set anything in the Database tab because we're using the RESTful method. Under the Skips tab we can see the ability to skip various different things but we don't need to bother about that we just want to migrate our entire web site. So leave that alone and we can leave alone the Templates, Permissions and Debug. So for now just click Save & Close to save those settings. We are now back at the page where we can actually perform the upgrade.
It may not look like it but this big box in the middle is actually a button. When you click on it the migration of your data from your existing Joomla 1.5 site to your new site will begin. Don't worry nothing will change on your existing web site. Click on the button to begin. The migration process is now taking place. Depending on the size of your web site and the amount of data to be migrated this may take some time. Don't worry just leave it to run. You can see here an update process telling you exactly what is taking place, which items are being migrated, so that you have confidence that the process is running and has not hung. Once the migration has completed you will see a success message. We're now ready to move on to our next video where we will configure and complete the process.
