Permissions and directory listing of public_html

The permissions of the public_html folder are set to 711 by default on our servers. This is done as a security measure to make sure that no other user on the server will be able to browse in the directory.

Those permissions will not allow directory listing to be enabled by solely using the Options +Indexes rule in a .htaccess file. If you want to enable the directory listing, you should also change the permissions of public_html to 755. Note that the permissions of the public_html folder can be changed only via SSH.
