FTP Timeout Explained & Troubleshooting Tips

If you receive an FTP connection timed out error while trying to access your account, there are several reasons for that. Please, take a look at the list below for more information on what causes the issue and how to fix it.

  • Your Internet Service Provider is blocking the port you're trying to use to connect via FTP - Port 21. Read our article on how to check if port 21 is blocked on your computer for further instructions;
  • Your FTP client is not set to work in Passive mode - please, refer to your FTP client documentation on how exactly you can switch between different FTP modes;
  • Your domain name is expired or is resolving incorrectly. You can eliminate this issue by accessing your account directly via its IP address;

      Prashant, the best course of action is to check your Azure server firewall settings and if everything is fine, but the issue persists to submit a support ticket with your FTP credentials + VM IP address.

      Sarbjit, the IP address of your computer might have been blocked due to too many failed login attempts. I'd recommend you to post a support ticket and my colleagues will be happy to check this for you.

    Dear Ivan,

    You have a great a very helpful website. Sorry for bothering you, but I've faced a problem that no one (yet) is able to solve.
    I was trying to log in to couple of my websites through an FTP client (first WinSCP, then FileZilla). The client shows error "Connection timed out".
    Such problem has never happened before, I haven't changed login credentials neither port/settings.
    I've increased the timeout interval, cleaned cache and done some other things, but nothing helped.

    I also tried to check the 21 port, but my cmd doesn't recognize the command you recommend to use.

    Anyway, I'm stuck and full of frustration. I've no Idea what to do - I checked my antivirus (Eset Nod) and Windows firewall (I've Windows 8.1)
    This might be caused by Eset, because I've donwloaded it recently and the problem appeared right after, but as I said, I've checked some settings and couldn't find anything.

    I would be grateful for your input, even a couple of words...

    Kind regards,
    Ka

      Hello,

      It is possible that the antivirus software you are using is blocking the FTP connection. You can try with another antivirus software and test the connection.

      If you are a SiteGround customer, I would recommend posting a ticket from your User Area -> Support. This will allow us to check the server logs and see if an error was recorded, which will enable us to confirm if this is an issue with your local setup.
