How do I find out what errors indicate?

To find out what an error indicates, check its HTTP error code. The most common error codes are 403 Forbidden, 404 Not Found, 500 Internal Server Error, 503 Service Unavailable and 504 Gateway Timeout. In most cases, the reason to see them is:

  • 403 – missing directory index, deny rule in .htaccess, insufficient permissions
  • 404 – missing request file/document root
  • 500 – incorrect ownership, too wide permissions, incorrect rules in .htaccess, PHP version not suitable
  • 503 – high load
  • 504 – Apache/NGINX timeout
