EPP Code – What is EPP Code

What is EPP Code

The EPP key (Authorization code) is one of the safeguards against unauthorized transfers of domain name registrations and it protects your rights as a domain owner. The EPP key is required when transferring .com, .net, .org, .biz, .info and .us domain names. It is not possible to initiate a domain name transfer for these domains without an EPP code.

Where to find the EPP Code

If your domain is registered by SiteGround you can obtain the EPP key in your Customer's area, My Account, Domain names. Next to the domain you are interested in there will be a button "Manage". Following this link will provide you with all the information about your domain name including an Obtain EPP Code section at the end. You can request that the EPP key code that is needed for domain transfer is sent to you. The code will be sent to the administrative email related with your domain name.

Here is a more detailed explanation about EPP key with screenshots on this matter.

If your domain is NOT registered by SiteGround, you will need to contact your current registrar to obtain the EPP key before being able to initiate a domain transfer.  Please note that EPP codes are case sensitive.

Your domain name should also meet all domain name transfer requirements before it can be transferred to SiteGround. Then you can initiate the transfer from your SiteGround Customer Area > Order tab > Domain Transfer.

If you are having issues with your host/registrar and you cannot obtain your EPP key, you may not be able to manage your domain and transfer it elsewhere. In such cases it may be best to use a new domain name for your website.

By signing up for an account at SiteGround, you can get a free domain name for your website. What is more, as long as your account is hosted with us, your domain name will be renewed for free.

Last but not least, with each new hosting account at SiteGround you can have the website from your other host transferred to SiteGround for free. We'll also make sure your site is configured to work properly on our servers.

Looking at my reseller account now. This entry is incorrect. EPP key is NOT displayed in the area described, instead there is an option to "Obtain EPP code" via email. Selecting that option, i get a message saying the EPP code will be sent to the admin address on my account "in 24 hours". So far no EPP code. If the 24 hour thing is actually accurate, do not expect to get your EPP code today - you will get it tomorrow i guess? Hope you aren't in a hurry.

EDIT: spoke too soon. EPP code arrived within a few more minutes. So i guess "in 24 hours" meant "WITHin 24 hours". Either way, be advised that this entry is not quite accurate; you won't see your EPP code here, you will have to request it from here instead.

Indeed the EPP code needs to be obtain through your User Area and it will be delivered to the admin email associated with your domain registration. We'll alter this article accordingly.

How do I transfer my domain from Name.com to Siteground?

I believe that this guide will be useful in your case.

Basically, you should contact the current registrar and ask them to unlock the domain, make sure that the domain has no active Domain Privacy/ID Protection, and provide you with the EPP key.
If needed, you should change the administrative contact email associated with the domain so that the transfer can be successful.

NOTE: Domain names registered less than 60 days ago (counting from the date you will initiate the transfer) cannot be transferred. A domain that is close to expiring cannot be transferred as well.
