Enable root login over SSH for Dedicated Servers on Windows/PuTTY
Note that if you intend to establish an SSH (and WHM) connection your IP address will have to be whitelisted in the firewall of your server. You can request this by posting a ticket in your User Area -> Report Other Technical Issues and provide us with your public IP address.
Once you complete the installation on your computer you will need to generate an SSH key pair via PuTTY. This process is covered in this article:
Next, you will need to access WHM with your root user and add the public key that you've generated. After you access WHM go to Manage SSH Keys located in the Security section. Click the Import Key button. Type in a name and a passphrase for the key and paste your public key in the corresponding field. You should NOT paste your private key. Click Import to import your key.
Launch puttygen.exe and navigate to File -> Load Private Key, browse for your private key, open it and enter the passphrase. The passphrase was specified during the generation of the SSH key pair in cPanel.
If everything was done correctly you will receive a message saying Successfully imported foreign key. Click on the Save private key button and choose the (*.ppk) format for the file.
Open pageant.exe and load your private key in it. You may be prompted for the passphrase of your key again.
Start putty.exe and enter the following connection details in the Sessions category:
- Host name - enter the host/IP of the Dedicated server to which you wish to connect
- Port - the port for the connection - use 18765
- Protocol - SSH
Press Open to establish the connection. Use root as a Username when prompted.
