Joomla 1.7 review
The first stable version of the Joomla 1.7 branch was released on July 19th. This came only 6 months after Joomla 1.6 was released. The short period was really amazing, having in mind that the previous two transitions to the next major version took the Joomla team 3 years each. However, the promise on the official Joomla website is that from now on we should expect a new major version on each 6 months! We are excited about this news, especially because we saw some real steps in making the transition to the new versions much easier than they previously were.
At some point last year, SingleHop, whose data centers hosted part of our business, informed me about a brand new facility they had just started to use in Chicago. What they were saying about it was so impressive that I decided to go and personally check the place. At that point SiteGround was using several data centers, operated by different providers and had no plans to change the situation, but my visit to the facility laid the foundations for some new plans.
The building of the new Data Center is located in the western suburbs of Chicago – a city that never seizes to amaze me not only with its beauty, friendly people and style, but with its technology culture and the wide variety of hosting companies based there. The data center name is DFT (stands for Dupont Fabros Technology) CH1 and is one of the Midwest’s most sophisticated and efficient data centers.

UPDATE: We no longer have a partner relationship with 2checkout and the stated special terms do not apply anymore.
SiteGround is happy to announce a new partnership with 2Checkout - a company for online payment processing services. As a result of this partnership each of our customers will have the initial setup fee for a 2Checkout account completely waived. The discount code is available in the Free Resources section of the SiteGround customer area. With this new free addition we provide a very convenient way to all e-commerce website owners to start selling goods and services online with no initial investment for payment processing.
This initiative is in line with our consistent policy of sharing SiteGround online business experience with our customers. We have used 2Checkout service ourselves when we were a starting company. Back then in 2004 SiteGround faced many challenges typical for a start up. One of the fundamental issues was the online payments processing. At the beginning we looked for a solution that could handle the multiple strict security regulations and complex procedures for fraud review, credit card information storage and handling on behalf of our company, as to do this ourselves required substantial investment of time and resources, which we were not yet ready to afford. And what we have found to be among the most appropriate options for fast and easy start to accept online payments was the 2Checkout account.
Now, seven years later, we are happy that 2Checkout, the company that has helped us have a successful start, is willing to make the payment processing setup even easier for our customers . Based on our own experience we strongly believe that by providing this free 2Checkout account we will make it easier for more people to have a successful e-commerce website. We have always looked for ways to share our successful practices and we will continue to do it as we know that our future depends on our customers' success.
At SiteGround we are always looking for new ways to offer great opportunities for entrepreneurs to grow their small business online. That’s why we are happy to support VeriSign domain registrar in their latest initiative – a contest for small businesses with .net and .com domain names.
The contest’s grand prize is $25,000 and all you have to do is answer the following question: Where will .com/.net domain take your business?
Apart from the $25,000 Grand Prize, the first 36 candidates to submit an entry to the contest will be awarded a $50 U.S. Visa Award Card. In order to participate, you simply have to upload a photo of your business, accompanied by either a written entry of between 100 and 300 words, or a short video. Submissions should be posted on the official contest websites:
This is clearly a great opportunity for small business owners who understand the value of expanding their online presence. The contest is open for participants worldwide- not just in US and Canada, but in countries including Mexico, Germany, United Kingdom, Poland, Turkey, Japan, India, South Korea, Australia and New Zealand. To look up if it is available in your country of residence, simply go to the official websites and browse the countries drop-down.
The contest ends on May 31st, so you need to hurry to make sure you have enough time to submit your application. Visit the official contest websites www.dotnetforsmallbiz.net and www.dotcomforsmallbiz.com to read more about the contest terms and complete the official entry form.

SiteGround is now completely ready for Joomla 1.6! After the new Joomla version was released there has been a significant adjustment activity at SiteGround. First, we made sure that our hosting is fully compatible with the new Joomla version, then we prepared a Joomla 1.6 tutorial and released several Joomla 1.6 templates. Finally, it was time for our extensions to get some attention too.
We have just released the new versions of our free Joomla extensions which are developed in compliance with the new criteria and requirements of Joomla 1.6. Now all our extensions except jAutoUpdate have a version that works perfectly with a native Joomla 1.6 installation. As soon as Joomla releases a newer subversion of its 1.6 branch we will start working on the jAutoUpdate too, as currently it cannot be useful with only one Joomla 1.6 version available. You can now download all new versions on our Joomla 1.6 Extensions page! The Joomla 1.6 ready extensions are:
