Joomla 1.7 review

The first stable version of the Joomla 1.7 branch was released on July 19th. This came only 6 months after Joomla 1.6 was released. The short period was really amazing, having in mind that the previous two transitions to the next major version took the Joomla team 3 years each. However, the promise on the official Joomla website is that from now on we should expect a new major version on each 6 months! We are excited about this news, especially because we saw some real steps in making the transition to the new versions much easier than they previously were.

One click update and good backward compatibility

The previous transitions to major versions, respectively to Joomla 1.5 and than to Joomla 1.6 required some serious effort, as the upgrade was not automatic nor it was seamless and the templates and extensions developed for the previous version usually did not work for the new one.

Maybe the most important feature included in the new version is the One Click Update. To test this we installed a Joomla 1.6.5 applications on a regular default account on one of our hosting servers and tried to update it to the latest Joomla 1.7 version. (for more info read our How to upgrade to Joomla 1.7 tutorial) We were happy to see that finally the developers from the Joomla team have managed to create an easy update method that doesn’t require multiple actions and PHP/MySQL knowledge to upgrade to the new version. All we had to do is click on an update button and voahla! The new Joomla 1.7 was in front of us.

Once we upgraded our Joomla application to the new version it was time to check whether the installed templates are still working properly. We installed a lot of sample data and then tested our templates with the new Joomla 1.7 version. Once again thumbs up for the Joomla team – everything was working perfectly fine.

Finally, our Joomla extensions were put to the test. Once again everything was working without any issues.

Better Multilanguage Support

The first really big improvement in multilanguage support was introduced by Joomla in version 1.6. The new version now updates and improves this functionality making it even better and more flexible. The new features include the ability to select between drop-down and buttons for the language switch display module, change the order of the available languages and more improvements.

Batch control over multiple articles

With the new Joomla 1.7 comes a functionality that owners of big sites have dreamed of since the day they have installed Joomla – control over multiple articles. Now you can move and copy more than one article at a time. Just select the articles you want to manage in your Article Manager page and chose the action you want to perform from the buttons list above.

In conclusion, we have to say that Joomla 1.7 adds functionality requested by the community without the hassle of a difficult upgrade process, re-creation of templates and extensions and more.

  • The best feature I can see is the update of the framework which has been made less complicated and I believe it is a lot stable than the shaky 1.6 that I believe was released in haste.

  • Thanks for offering ease of use and support. real access to the web has been an issue for non technicals like me. Now my site is on the ground and not just in my head.

  • I'm a very happy customer of your hosting services, and I'm using Joomla 1.7. It works like a charm!!! Thank you guys from Siteground.

  • This is awesome. I am getting ready to upgrade my sites to 1.7 and just saw this post now.

    Thanks for being awesome Siteground.

  • Although Joomla 1.7 provided some important improvements, I still prefer to work on the 1.5 version, in order to keep all my contents compatibles.

  • It was great to me when I found the latest version of Joomla is available to install through fantastico.

  • Hi,

I am having issues with Apache not being in compliance for some Joomla 1.7.x extensions.

    Apache version 2.2.21
    PHP version 5.2.17
    MySQL version 5.1.60-community-log

Can I get my clients Apache version updated and in compliance?

    • Hi Mark,

Could you elaborate and specify the exact Joomla extension you are willing to use? We will then happily further assist you :)

      Looking forward to your reply.

      • I am afraid that at we cannot accommodate Apache 2.0 on our regular hosting accounts. At this point we can only install custom Apache on our Dedicated servers.

We can try to install the component on your shared account by bypassing the check, but we cannot guarantee it will work correctly on our current shared server Apache version.

Want to give it a try?
