So it’s live! After a few weeks of testing it, we can now shout it out loud: we launched our new User Area. A six-month project that involved the deletion of thousands of lines of old code, a totally new file structure on the backend, and lots of work on a fancier front-end.
“Hey Lily, we've moved to Singapore!” I got this message few days ago on FaceBook from one of my college mates, who had just left Washington DC for a fresh start in Asia. Knowing what we were working on the last few weeks, I was tempted to answer: “We are already there too!”. I just imagined how she would read my reply several times, trying to figure out what was going on, knowing me as a person, who had never considered a relocation. The truth is that I haven't packed for a new home, as I really love mine. However, SiteGround has added a new data center location and we now have servers in Singapore too!
We are happy to announce the launch of our first server location outside the USA. We would soon be welcoming our first accounts in Europe and this is the beginning of a bigger geographical expansion that will address the needs of our customers outside the USA.
We aim to address better the needs of the thousands of international customers we host.
Although till now we have operated only servers based in the USA, our hosting services have always been used by many people outside the States. Part of these people choose our service because they operate websites that target mainly US customers, so having such a site hosted on a US server made perfect sense, as it would be faster and easily available for its visitors.
As you may already know, in SiteGround we've always been in pursuit of server tweaks, hacks and optimizations with one primary goal - deliver the fastest possible (and secure at the same time) website loading speed. We know how important it is for a website to load fast, how frustrating it is having to wait for 15 seconds just to see a header banner image and then 10 more seconds to load the body of the website. And nowadays even search engines like Google take into account website loading speed when it comes to search results.
During the years our system operations team, the brilliant geeks who write all the beautiful system software for SiteGround, has written thousands of lines of code to help us optimize the security and speed of the hosted websites. We've revolutionized how shared hosting industry works with the 1H Software, which by the way provides one of the fastest methods of running PHP nowadays. Since then, all our shared and semi-dedicated servers run and operate with 1H Software and many clients have praised us about the speed with which their websites are delivered.
Yet, we know we could do even more. So, our admin team started the year 2012 with one goal in mind - creating the fastest shared web hosting platform out there. And I think we're almost there. Here's in brief what's cooking for you in our admin kitchen. I'll be updating this as it goes on throughout the year, but the results I am about to share are already impressive...
Do you know that feeling when you’re not in front of your computer, but you need to find something online quickly – you thank God for your smart phone. It has everything you need in the palm of your hand. You start browsing on your phone, looking up what you need online. And then the frustration kicks in - even if it is a website that you use every day on your computer, if it is not optimized for mobile devices, opening it up on a smart phone and finding what you need can take ages. Up to the point when you give up – and simply try googling a new site that will give you what you want faster, on time and in a way that you can easily read and interact with on your mobile phone. When I say SPAM, you will most probably think of the annoying unwanted emails INCOMING to your own Inbox, and this is definitely one of the SPAM aspects we have been fighting for a long time and which I am proud we have already minimized very successfully. However, in this post I would like to address another aspect – the OUTGOING SPAM: how it affects you and what is the newest solution we have applied to it.
Since I started dealing with hosting (and probably many years before that), outgoing SPAM has been one of the most troublesome aspects for a hosting company. It might sound strange to you, but the spammers are causing hosting companies (and you, our customers) a lot of troubles, headaches and even migraines. How? I will explain in details below. Read More
[Update: Offer is no longer valid] Barely into the start of the new year, we already have a new extra to tell you about! The Google AdWords online advertising program has been around for quite some time and has already proved to be one of the most successful and efficient ways to promote your website online. We have been trying for some time now to reach an agreement with Google to start promoting their program to SiteGround clients by giving vouchers for free advertising, because we really do believe that people who get the opportunity to try it out, will see for themselves how efficient it is. Google, however, have a very strict policy on the country availability for the program and it took us some time to finally get a chance to provide our customers with this service. Read More
Fantastico has been on our servers for a long time now, and it is quite possible that you know and like the smiley face in your cPanel, and have used it to install or update a software on your hosting account. However, we have started to get the impression that the guys behind the auto-installer have become a little spoiled by the fact that many people use Fantastico just because it is integrated in the cPanel and are sometimes a little negligent about the quality of their service. Just a few examples from our experience to back up this statement:
