Gallery 2 Installation Detailed Tutorial

Once in Fantastico, please find Gallery 2 from the list of applications or search for Picture galleries. Click on it and follow the instructions. In 3 clicks you will be ready with the Gallery installation.

How to install Gallery manually?

The latest version of Gallery can be downloaded from here:

http://gallery.menalto.com/downloads

Once you've downloaded the release you want, you can upload it to your hosting account using the File Manager tool or via FTP (Learn more about FTP clients and accounts here).

Next you need to go to the File Manager (at your cPanel) and to unpack (extract) the file in the desired folder.

How to install Gallery, once you have the files uploaded

First you need to create a new database from the cPanel -> MySQL Databases Area and then set a username from the cPanel -> MySQL Databases Area and add it to the database. You can find detailed instructions on how to create a MySQL database and attach a user to it in our MySQL Database tutorial.

Next, please, open in your browser the following URL: http://yourdomain/gallery2/install/ (provided that you have not changed the name of the Gallery 2 folder)

And follow the instructions:

Step 1: Select the Language you want and press [Begin Installation].

Step 2: Go to your cPanel -> File Manager and select the [Create New File] option.

Step 3: Name the file: login.txt. Click on the file and edit it through the link on the right side of your screen.

Step 4: Paste the code listed at the gallery installation screen.

Step 5: Save the file through the the Editor and then click on [Authenticate me] at the Installation process.

Step 6: Since the SiteGround servers are perfectly optimized for the Gallery 2 script, you should press the [Continue] button till you reach step 3.

Step 7: Select the Standard Installation and press [Continue] to step 4.

Step 8: At the Directory Path box, you will be asked to create a folder for the Gallery 2 files. You can do this through your File Manager. You need to go to the folder of Gallery 2 under your account and to click on [Create a New Folder]. Name it g2data and click on [Save].

Step 9: Continue to step 5 where you will need to type the database information:

Database Type: MySQL
Database Hostname: localhost
DB username: the username that you created*
DB password: the password for the username
DB name: username_database (* Same rules as for the username)
Table Prefix : g2_
Column prefix: g_

Please note that it gets the user prefix. For example if you add a database, called 'gallery' and your cpanel username is 'username' the full name of the database is username_gallery.

Step 10: Click [Save] and continue to step 6.

Step 11: Fill in your admin login details here, click [Create and continue] to next step.

Step 12: Continue to step 8.

Step 13: Continue to step 9.

Step 14: Click on [Activate Selected Module] at the bottom of the page.

Step 15: Continue to step 10.

Step 16: Continue to step 11.

Step 17: Click on [Go to my Gallery]. The installation is completed.

Well done! You have successfully installed Gallery 2 on your hosting account.

Gallery and Joomla CMS

Gallery can be installed separately as a component in Joomla CMS. This is the easiest way to integrate the two applications. The files for the integration can be found here:

http://joomlacode.org/gf/project/gallery2_bridge/frs/

Before proceeding with the Gallery2 component installation, you should install the JoomlaLib component, wich can be downloaded from:

http://joomlacode.org/gf/download/frsrelease/4490/10193/com_joomlalib_1_3_1.zip

Then you will just need to download the Gallery2 component and to install it through Joomla Administration Area. In order to do that, please, choose the Installers -> Components menu.

Please, find more detailed instructions how to install Joomla extensions here.

After installing the component you should navigate to Components -> Galley2 -> Settings and enter the paths to your Gallery2 script. The other option is to use the installation wizard.

Please mind that the component integration can be a difficult and a time consuming procedure. SiteGround.com provides it as a paid service. If you need assistance with the Joomla-Gallery integration, please post a ticket in Exclusive Professional Services -> Application Integration.

Gallery Upgrade

How to upgrade the Gallery 2 application?

Updating Gallery is quick, easy and can be done in a few minutes. Please follow these steps, in order to complete this process properly:

Step 1: Make a backup

The upgrade process should be very safe. But just in case, it's a very good idea for you to make a backup. So before you perform this upgrade you should backup the database and the files of your Gallery application. If something goes wrong, you can always restore the backup and try again. You can check our detailed backup tutorial for more instructions on how to backup your script installation.

Step 2: Identify your Gallery 2 version

In order to know which upgrade package to download, you need to know which version of Gallery you currently run. Browse to your Gallery 2 installation in your web browser, log in as an administrator, click the "Site Admin" link then click the "Maintenance" link. You'll be presented with a list of maintenance tasks. Next to the task marked System Information click the run now link and then look for a line labelled Gallery version.

Gallery 2 upgrade - current Gallery version

Step 3: Review the Release Notes and Known Issues

Before starting the upgrade, you should review the release notes of the latest Gallery 2 version and scan through the known issues. (The requirements of Gallery 2 might have changed (e.g. the required PHP version) or there might be a documented upgrade problem for your specific setup.)

Step 4: Upgrade the Application Files

There are three ways to upgrade:

  1. Replace all files: Download a complete replacement for your Gallery 2. This is slower, but very reliable.
  2. Use an update file: Replace only what's changed since the major release. This option is only available for security & patch releases. If you've modified your Gallery 2 code, this technique can preserve your changes. It's faster than a complete replacement, but takes a little more know-how.
  3. Update from Subversion: This is the best approach if you've made changes to your Gallery 2 code. It's relatively fast and won't step on any changes you've made, but it requires a lot of know-how and is not available to most people.

Step 5: Replace all files

Please, Download a complete new copy of Gallery 2 and simply unpack it on top of your existing Gallery 2 installation and then run the upgrader. This is a simple but a slow method. Also, any modifications that you've made to Gallery 2 will be lost when you replace the files, with the exception of template changes made in local directories.

Notes:

  • The Pre-Installer can also be used to quickly upload a new version to your website. See: Upgrading with the Pre-Installer
  • Gallery 2 packages come in 4 flavors (typical, minimal, full, and developer). You should try to make sure you download the same package as you did before.

Step 6: Run the web based upgrader.

Once your files have been updated, please, open up your Gallery 2 in your web browser and it will take you to the upgrader automatically. Follow the instructions there.

Gallery 2 upgrade - upgrader

On step 2 of the upgrader, the Gallery file integrity check should show Success.

Gallery 2 upgrade - Success

If there are missing/deleted/modified files listed here, you should make sure that these are files that you have modified in your own copy. If it reports over hundred missing files from the modules/core/test directory then verify that you did not accidentally install the developer zip of changed files over an install that was originally from the minimal, typical or full version. If you did that's ok! Just go back and get the right zip file and try again.

Notes:

  • If you use a PHP accelerator / cache (e.g. Turk mmCache, Ioncube PHPA, eaccelerator, Zend Studio, etc.), flush (clear) the cache of the accelerator. Omitting this step can sometimes lead to errors during and after the upgrade process.
  • If you have not already, backup your Gallery before upgrading the core module!

Upon successful completion it will drop you back into your Gallery 2 install with the latest version and you're done.

Gallery 2 upgrade - Finished

If you do not feel ready to make the Gallery upgrade yourself and you host with SiteGround, you have the alternative to purchase an application upgrade from our script installation specialists, by posting a ticket under: Customer Area -> Get Support Section -> Get Support HelpDesk -> Exclusive Professional Services -> Application upgrade
